The show goes on at Tremains Primary School

Children from Tremains Primary are set to take centre stage after a donation from Tarmac’s Aberthaw Cement Plant has led to a staging area being built in the playground – for all to enjoy.

Tarmac answered the plea after the School Council, made up of representatives from across all year groups, went out to ask pupils what they would like to see at the school. With a staging area receiving a unanimous response, the school contacted local business Tarmac to see if they could help.

Tarmac Aberthaw’s Head of Mechanical, Richard Jones explains:

“When we were approached by the school I knew that this was just the project for us at Tarmac! We are keen to support communities close to the plant and those where our colleagues live and, so we wasted no time and set to work.”

Richard spent time planning the work and enlisting the support of a Tarmac supply chain partner, Excel Power Construction, which kindly supplied equipment free of charge. Richard and two mechanical craftsmen colleagues, Colin Jones and Steve Bullock, then spent three gruelling days during the school holidays erecting the staging area ready for the pupils return for the new academic year.

Deputy Headteacher at Tremains Primary School, Kim McDonald, said:

“We were absolutely thrilled to learn that Tarmac were able to help us with our number one wish.”

The staging area is now used by pupils every break and lunch time, whilst it is also planned to be utilised during outdoor school assemblies and for events such as Tremains Has Talent.

Mrs McDonald continued:

“The pupils were delighted to see the staging area for the first time and it’s already getting such a lot of use. On behalf of everyone at the school, I’d like to thank Tarmac and their suppliers for their kind-hearted donation and hard work to get the stage in place ready for the new school year.”

Tarmac provided the donation to the school as part of its commitment to supporting the communities in which it works and those in which its colleagues live.

Richard added:

We are delighted that the staging area will help enrich the lives of those attending the school – now and well into the future.”

Aberthaw Cement Plant is the only cement works in south Wales. Cement made at Aberthaw has contributed to some of Wales’ most significant construction projects of recent time, including Pembroke Power Station, The Millennium Centre and home of the Welsh Government – The Senedd, both in Cardiff Bay.
