Dedicated employee celebrates long service with Tarmac

August 8, 2023

Local quarry chargehand at Tarmac’s Aberthaw site, Martin Scamp, has achieved 45 years of service with the building materials and construction solutions business.

Martin started his career in 1978 at Plymstock, near Plymouth, working for Blue Circle – a former name for Tarmac. When the Plymstock site closed in 1999, he moved to Wales and joined the Aberthaw team.

When asked, what attracted him to work for Tarmac, Martin said: “Tarmac has always been in my family. My father worked for Plymstock as a delivery driver and my brother was a cement miller. Additionally, my mother was an office cleaner at the site, and we would often attend the company social events as a family.”

Commenting on the best thing about working at Aberthaw and with his team, Martin said: “Coming to work has never been a challenge for me, it’s something I have always looked forward to and enjoyed. A good team needs to have a thriving relationship and great communication, and my team has both.

“I enjoy working with them and we socialise outside of work too. It’s not just that they are my work colleagues, they are also my friends, and we support each other. I know I am trusted and respected by the team.”

Martin’s proudest moments with Tarmac are reaching the different long serving milestones, such as 10, 20 and 30 years, but he is mostly proud of reaching 45 years of service.

In response to being asked what has kept him working for Tarmac for all these years, Martin commented: “It’s been a brilliant career for me! The security, the people and the place keep me here. Working with the teams I have through the years has been very important to me. I have seen some big changes for the better throughout the years and I look forward to continuing my long career at Aberthaw.”

Owen Llewellyn, quarry manager at Tarmac Aberthaw, said: “Congratulations to Martin on his 45 years of service with Tarmac. Martin is genuinely one of the happiest and nicest gentlemen on site, and a fantastic example of being a hard-working and dedicated individual. We’re incredibly happy that he has stayed with us over the decades and look forward to him staying a very valued member of the team, as every site needs a Martin.”
