Welcome to Aberthaw

At Aberthaw, our employees work in a range of diverse and exciting roles. Here, we put the spotlight on team members and get to know more about them and their job at the site.

Stuart Escott - Plant manager

Stuart Escott joined the Aberthaw team as an apprentice fitter and turner in 1986, and never thought that 35 years later he’d be the Plant manager.

Stuart said, “Having worked here for many years with a short break to work at a site in Nigeria, I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the fantastic Aberthaw team.  Taking over in 2020 and working with the challenges of Covid-19, was of course challenging.  But we continue our focus on the safe and sustainable operation of the site and our hugely important links with the community.”

Zena Rogers - apprentice

Zena, 22, joined us in 2019.  She developed an interest in engineering through her dad’s work in the industry and enrolled on an Electrical and Electronic Engineering course at Bridgend College.

Zena says:  “Although I had a keen interest in engineering, I wasn’t sure where to pursue a career. At college I completed my Level 3 NVQ and at the same time learned about the different types of engineering.  I became interested in the skills and knowledge I could learn through an apprenticeship.

“I had almost no knowledge of heavy industry but was excited by the challenge. Working at Tarmac while continuing to further my education is amazing.  I have learnt a lot so far in my apprenticeship.  I work closely with the former electrical apprentices and my co-workers in the electrical department and they are constantly sharing their tips of the trade.

“As a female in this field my advice to those looking to go into an industry where women make up a small percentage of the staff is to go for it! If it is what you love to do, nothing can hold you back and you can always find a way to move forward.”

Health and safety

Protecting the safety, health and wellbeing of our employees, contractors and those around us is a core value of our business. We work in potentially hazardous environments so it’s important that everyone understands how to go about their jobs safely.

We believe that no task is so important that it can’t be done safely and through measurement and learning we can continuously improve our performance. Everyone working at Aberthaw is expected to work in a safe, responsible manner and to challenge unsafe behaviour.

We give everyone on site a thorough safety induction so they know our behavioural expectations and how to stay safe. We are very careful to separate out traffic and pedestrian movements, and we undertake risk assessments before each activity so that we know the risks involved and can prepare for them.

We measure our safety record by recording everything from a Near Miss (Unsafe Act or Condition), First Aid Treatment, Medical Injuries, and incidents that mean someone has to take time off work, known as a Lost Time Injury (LTI), so we can learn and avoid them altogether in the future.

On site, everyone outside the office buildings must wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

The Mineral Products Association’s (MPA) has a Safe Quarry hub where you can access further information.
