Tarmac’s Aberthaw plant is helping Rhoose Community Library build the foundations for its Lego Club after donating essential storage containers to the group.
The club, which started last year and now welcomes around 20 young children each week, received the donation of four huge Lego containers to house the growing selection of kit.
Set up to give local youngsters the chance to take part in various fun challenges to help improve skills such as maths, architecture and engineering, the club continues to grow but is reliant on such donations in order to continue running.
Club volunteer, Christine Jakeway, explains:
“We are thrilled to have the support of Tarmac and without such donations, we simply wouldn’t be able to put on the club each week.
“Children think they’re coming to play and build with Lego but they’re doing so much more. We have activities and challenges that require them to put their skills to the test –in a fun environment.
“We know that Tarmac has played a huge supporting role to the library and it’s great that, once again, the team at Aberthaw is supporting us to put on more at the library so that it remains a facility for everyone in the local Rhoose community.”
Tarmac provided the donation as part of its commitment to supporting the communities in which it works and those in which its colleagues live.
Kara Bennett, Tarmac Aberthaw’s Environmental Co-ordinator, added:
“We know how important the library is to the local community and we are delighted to see the growing number of clubs and events that it houses.
“Tarmac is committed to building environments that encourage inclusion and diversity to support our future generation in developing and building essential STEM related skills.
“When we found out about the Lego Club, we jumped at the chance to donate the storage boxes. We hope the Club will encourage young people from all backgrounds in the local community to participate and develop in the areas of innovation and engineering. In our industry we know first-hand the importance of children playing with things like Lego – it really does open their minds and tests their various skills – and let’s be honest you never know where it will help them in the future!”
Lego Club runs every Monday and Friday between 3.30-4.30pm at Rhoose Community Library.
Aberthaw Cement Plant is the only cement works in south Wales. Cement made at Aberthaw has contributed to some of Wales’ most significant construction projects of recent time, including Pembroke Power Station, The Millennium Centre and home of the Welsh Government – The Senedd, both in Cardiff Bay.
