Rhws pupils help spread the safety message at Tarmac

July 20, 2018

Four pupils from Rhws Primary have been awarded prizes for their input to a safety competition run by Tarmac’s Aberthaw cement plant.

Over 70 pupils from the school were invited to participate in the competition, which asked them to design a site safety poster, after the team from Aberthaw held a school assembly earlier in the year.

The contest was set at the assembly and asked pupils to think about the site safety challenges the team at Aberthaw face on a day-to-day basis and come up with a poster design of things to look out for and what to practice by way of site safety. The winning designs will now be display across the site for all 100 staff to see.

Tarmac’s Stuart Escott, Maintenance Manager led the assembly and set the competition, he said:

“We are delighted with the number of entries we received to the competition and the standard was exceptional. Choosing winners was a hard job and I’d like to congratulate everyone who took part.

“At the plant we are committed to safety and, as you can imagine, we have a lot of site safety rules. These posters will now go on display across the site to remind our colleagues of their safety obligations.

The posters really hit home, as their colourful and informative. On behalf of everyone at the plant I’d like to thank everyone who took part.”

The winners were all presented with prizes which included tablets, headphones and a range of Tarmac goodies.

Aberthaw Cement Plant is the only cement works in south Wales. Cement made at Aberthaw has contributed to some of Wales’ most significant construction projects of recent time, including Pembroke Power Station, The Millennium Centre and home of the Welsh Government – The Senedd, both in Cardiff Bay.
