Member of the Welsh Parliament for South Wales Central, Andrew RT Davies MS has donned high visibility safety gear for a visit to Tarmac’s cement manufacturing site at Aberthaw, one of the largest and oldest employers in his area.
Mr Davies enjoyed a presentation about the business and a tour of the site, including the kiln, part of the Tarmac operation which has been running for over 100 years and employs over 100 people. The site produces a range of essential cement products for use both for home DIY, and in major construction projects around Wales and the South West. Aberthaw cement has been used in iconic buildings such as the Senedd and the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
On his tour which was led by Aberthaw plant manager Stuart Escott, he chatted with several team members from across the operation including the one of our electrical engineering apprentices and a graduate trainee in his first week with Tarmac.
Stuart Escott said: “We were very pleased to welcome the recently returned MS to the site. It is important that we have an open and positive partnership with key local community representatives. Today’s visit gave Mr Davies a first-hand insight into our operations and the work we are doing to continually improve all aspects.
“As well as operational discussions, we also gave Mr Davies a flavour of our commitment to health and safety (particularly the work we continue to do to keep our teams Covid safe); people development; and sustainability. We look forward to continuing constructive discussions with him in the future.”
Andrew RT Davies said, “It was a pleasure to visit Tarmac once again and I’m extremely grateful to Stuart for taking the time to show me around.
“It’s a little-known fact that, after water, concrete is the second most used substance in the world. It’s vital to the world economy and Tarmac is playing a big part in that here at East Aberthaw. The plant employs 112 people locally and I look forward to continuing to work together in future.”
