Club ‘bowled over’ by local support

Barry Romilly Bowling Club has been ‘bowled over’ by a donation from Tarmac’s Aberthaw Cement Plant.

The Club, which was formed in 1908, has benefitted from a sponsorship donation from the company as it seeks to secure the Club’s future after local funding cuts have meant the facility is now managed privately.

Tarmac, which has supported the Club previously, answered the plea and has provided funding which will go towards annual running costs of approximately £18,000.

Paul James, Barry Romilly Bowling Club Secretary, explains:
“We have been working hard to secure the future of the Club and, on behalf of our 86 members, I would like to thank the team at Tarmac Aberthaw for their generous support.

“The Club has been in existence for decades and we know that in future years we are going to face issues such as repairing our aging clubhouse, which is why we have been, and continue to work hard to increase our commercial viability.

“Recently we have seen our membership numbers increase and we are also working with a growing number of community groups so that they can use the venue for their benefit.”

Tarmac Aberthaw’s Administration Assistant, Lorraine Williams, said:
“We were delighted to lend our support to Barry Romilly Bowling Club and are happy that the donation will help them with their plans. We are always keen to support communities close to the plant and those where our colleagues live and, so this was a perfect opportunity to help.”

Paul added:
“The Club has become a community hub over the past year and is the main social centre for many of our members, where they meet their friends on a regular basis.

“The continued success of the Club is extremely important as it enhances both the physical and mental wellbeing of our members. I am thrilled that through donations like this we will be in a position to successfully continue as a hub for years to come.”

Tarmac provided the donation to the club as part of its commitment to supporting the communities in which it works and those in which its colleagues live.

Aberthaw Cement Plant is the only cement works in south Wales. Cement made at Aberthaw has contributed to some of Wales’ most significant construction projects of recent time, including Pembroke Power Station, The Millennium Centre and home of the Welsh Government – The Senedd, both in Cardiff Bay.
