Brownie group to address the needs of local young girls who want to become part of the Girl Guiding movement.
The 1st Barry Brownie group was set up towards the end of last year when Kindre Morgan and Kelly Ellis moved to the area and it soon became apparent there were long waiting lists at other local Brownie groups. With over ten years of experience in running units in other areas in Wales, Kindre and Kelly worked to set up the new group from scratch.
With little funding to help the group on their way, Kindre sought the help of local cement plant, Tarmac, which is situated in nearby Aberthaw.
Kindre explains:
“With such long waiting lists in other units, we decided to help young girls become part of the guiding movement and set up our own group. With recent changes to the Girl Guiding Programme it meant that we immediately needed to invest heavily in new resources and this is where Tarmac‘s help and support has been paramount.”
Tarmac’s kind-hearted donation has meant the group has been able to purchase essential resources including a flag, a series of skill builders, first aid books, song books and CD’s. The donation has ensured that the 1st Barry Brownies has got off to a flying start – to the benefit of its young members.
Tarmac provided the donation as part of its commitment to supporting the communities in which it works and those in which its colleagues live.
Kindre continued:
“We are so grateful to Tarmac for this donation – it has ensured that we are able to deliver the new programme from our members. We currently have ten girls in attendance each week and the plan is to double this within the next few months.
“Girl guiding is a fantastic opportunity for young girls to discover their potential and this donation will ensure that more people locally in Barry can benefit.”
Kara Bennett, Tarmac Aberthaw’s Environmental Co-ordinator, added:
“We are committed to supporting groups local to our plant and are thrilled that our donation has enabled the 1st Barry Brownies to get quickly established.
“We hope that the donation will bring a lot of happiness to young members for many years to come.”
The 1st Barry Brownies meets each Thursday at the Guiding Hall in Romilly Road, Barry.
Aberthaw Cement Plant is the only cement works in south Wales. Cement made at Aberthaw has contributed to some of Wales’ most significant construction projects of recent time, including Pembroke Power Station, The Millennium Centre and home of the Welsh Government – The Senedd, both in Cardiff Bay.
